Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation (and Minnesota) is a special exhibit at the Minnesota History Center (April 30-July 10). The exhibit travels from the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC and tells the story of Asian Indians in the USA and Minnesota and the many contributions they have made to both the nation and the state.
This exhibit follows the very successful exhibit telling the story of the Hmong journey in Minnesota. The Hmong and Asian Indians have very different immigrant experiences in the nation and Minnesota and so the Minnesota Historical Society has done an outstanding job bringing the diversity of the Asian immigrant journey in an experiential way for all Minnesotans.
Ram Gada, an Asian Indian community leader and long time supporter of the Minnesota Historical Society explored the possibility of bringing the exhibit to Minnesota. The Minnesota Historical Society responded positively and the rest is history. For the past several months Minnesota Historical Society staff have been working with a community advisory board, and the India Association of Minnesota and the Dr. Dash Foundation, to bring the Minnesota experience to the exhibit. What visitors will experience will be very unique and perhaps one of the few places in the country that has put in so much effort to bring the local experience to the exhibit.
Of course there will also be Bollywood style music, Mehndi, Indian food in the museum cafe and traditional cultural performances – check the link below for schedules.
